About ReSET

Volunteer opportunities in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia

ReSET volunteers are retired scientists, engineers and technicians who give their time, energy, and expertise to schoolchildren in the D.C. metro area. The diversity and depth of experience reflected in our volunteers is impressive, from a geologist who helped plan the first landing on the moon to a biochemist who was laboratory chief at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Because our volunteers have had successful careers in their respective professions, they are living, breathing vocational guides who can make a dry curriculum come alive.

ReSET's hands-on, inquiry-based approach gives students direct, intuitive, dynamic encounters with science and math—improving their literacy and awareness, and promoting a positive attitude towards once "scary" subjects.

We're unique!
  • ReSET offers informal educational experiences both in and outside the classroom.
  • ReSET focuses on improving attitude and interest for lifelong learning.
  • ReSET partners with a high percentage of economically disadvantaged schools and schools with predominately minority student populations.
  • ReSET volunteers are the "genuine article"—real scientists, engineers, and technicians with practical, first hand experience.
  • ReSET is intergenerational. Volunteers are the same age as the students' grandparents.

ReSET Volunteer, Howard Heydt, answers an eager question from one of his students.

"I enjoy continuing to be creative. It's fun and worthwhile, and I enjoy making an impact on the kids and seeing them respond. Many children will remember me when I come back the following year, and when they pass me in the halls, they give me a high-five."
Volunteer, Howard Heydt
